How to Request Services:

Click here to use our Online Intake Form.

If you are a person with a disability in Rhode Island and are experiencing a disability-related legal problem, you may call our intake staff at 401-831-3150. Individuals with hearing impairments may call our TTY line at 401-831-5335.

Services provided include information, referral, advice and in select cases, legal representation. There is no fee for our service. Intake staff are available Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

When You Call

When you call, an intake advocate will ask you questions about you and your issue such as:

  • Your name, address, and phone number
  • The nature of your disability
  • Some facts about your problem to help us determine how to best help you

If you have documents related to your issue, please have that information ready when you call. If an intake advocate is not available when you call, you will receive a call back within 48 hours.

Issue Review

The information obtained by the intake advocate will be reviewed to determine if your issue falls within our current focus areas. If we are able to investigate your issue, you will receive a letter and your file will be turned over to an attorney who will be in contact with you.

Please note that when you call it is not automatic that we will be able to help you. We are committed to providing assistance, but demand for our services often exceeds the availability of our resources. Cases must therefore be selected based upon our focus areas, which help us manage our limited resources and staff.

If we cannot help you directly, we may be able to provide you useful information and/or referral(s). Your calls are important to us even if we are unable to offer direct assistance as they keep us informed of issues in the disability community.

Visit our What We Do page for further details.

As required by our federal funding sources we have established a Grievance Policy.

Services provided by DRRI are free and confidential.

The point of entry for all requests for assistance is through the intake process. There are a number of ways to make a request:

Walk-in: Walk-ins are accepted, but please make an appointment ahead of time so we can have a staff member available and please make it known if an accommodation is needed.

We respond to each request in the order it is received. Please allow 1-3 business days for a response. Letters received via mail or fax will be assigned within 3 days of receipt and responded to within 7 days.

Each request is assigned to an intake advocate. The intake advocate will ask you for contact and demographic (i.e. race, gender) information. The advocate will also ask you for the  details of your request for assistance. The demographic information that DRRI collects is required for reports to our funding sources about the populations of people we are serving.

All requests for assistance receive at least an information and referral level of assistance.  Requests that meet DRRI mandates or focus areas, may receive additional assistance. The intake advocate will provide more information about the process, when necessary.
