Disability Rights Rhode Island (DRRI) is an independent, nonprofit law office designated as Rhode Island’s federal Protection and Advocacy (P&A) System. We are part of the national P&A network created by Congress to help secure and advance the rights of people with disabilities.
Our mission is to assist Rhode Islanders with disabilities in their efforts to achieve full inclusion in society and to exercise their civil and human rights through the provision of legal advocacy.
Established in 1977, we currently administer eight federally funded programs that authorize us to provide legal protection and advocacy across a broad spectrum of disability-related issues.
Individually, we provide services to over 1,000 persons with disabilities each year, while our systems advocacy work impacts the broader disability community as a whole.
Our services include individual legal representation to protect rights or secure benefits, self- help information and referrals, education and training, and promotion of systems change.
Our work provides assistance to individuals with disabilities on the following issues:
• Abuse and neglect in facilities
• Special education, including help with transition, behavioral health services and inclusion
• Medicaid services to help people live more independently
• Overcoming barriers to employment
• Access to assistive technology
• Voting access
