Did you know the Office of Rehabilitation Services (ORS) can help pay for Assistive Technology (AT) Devices?
If you are a client of ORS, they can help pay for AT devices. ORS can also pay for an evaluation or test to help you find the right device. And ORS can pay for training on how to use the device. The AT must be related to your employment training or goal. This means it would help you train for a job, look for a job, or perform the job. This can include –
- Technology that would help you to perform your job duties.
- Home modifications you need so you can work or have training independently.
- Modifications to the vehicle you will use to get to training or work.
What is ORS?
The Office of Rehabilitative Services (ORS) operates the state’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) program. VR helps people with disabilities learn about their employment options, train for employment, and find employment.
What is Assistive Technology?
Assistive technology (AT) is any device, technology or equipment that is used to improve or keep your functional capabilities. Examples of AT include screen magnifiers, power chairs, hearing aids and communication devices, headphones, touchscreens, and large display monitors. AT services are services that help you use your AT. They can include evaluation for a device, help choosing a device, and training on your device.
How do I know what type of AT to ask for?
ORS can help you get an evaluation to see if AT could help you. The evaluation should help you know what type of AT will help..
Will ORS pay for all the AT I need?
ORS provides AT evaluations at no cost to you. Depending on your income and your resources (such as insurance or Social Security benefits), ORS may pay for all or part of your AT. If you already have a device, ORS may still pay for training on how to use your device for work, training, or to find a job.
ORS may want you to use Medicaid, Medicare, or private insurance first. ORS may pay the rest of the cost of your AT. ORS cannot make you get insurance or other funding if that would delay you from getting a job or your AT services.
What if ORS won’t pay for the AT I requested?
ORS should tell you in writing that it will not help you get an AT evaluation, device, or service. You have the right to appeal this denial.
There are different ways to appeal the decision. For more information on how to appeal a denial of AT from ORS, contact Disability Rights Rhode Island at info@drri.org or 401-831-3150.
Where can I get more information about my rights as an ORS client?
For more information about your rights at ORS, you can read DRRI’s “Guide to Services From the Rhode Island Office of Rehabilitation Services” available in the resources section of our website: www.drri.org.
